I signed up for signature this year. When I sent the first one, I realized that there is no way to hide the SSNs of the taxpayers. The Lacerte Rep agreed that it is not possible.I am going back to the old way of sending signature documents until the SSNs can be masked.
I would love to see some of the integrated services available for ProConnect that are already available for Lacerte and other top professional tax software like ProSystem fx, CCH Axcess, Ultra Tax, etc.Specifically, I'd like to see the SafeSend Suite and Gruntworx (specifically the Populate option - which automates a lot of data entry for 1040 returns, I know of the scan and import feature, but Gruntworx has an option for human validation). I know ProConnect is really optimized for QuickBooks Online clients, but this software has so much potential and right now it is lacking in features for 1040 filers. These two integrations are geared towards 1040 returns - one for preparation and the other for assembly and delivery.
I am a new user to Lacerte who converted from UltraTax. UltraTax provides an analysis worksheet for both the current tax year and the next tax year projection that shows each Federal income tax bracket, the maximum amount of income subject to the tax bracket, the amount taxable in each bracket for the respective client, and the amount of tax imposed on the client at this bracket. If someone from Lacerte will contact me, I can provide them with PDF copies of this analysis which UltraTax refers to as "Reconciliation Worksheet - Taxable Income & Tax". I discussed this with my "Lacerte Success Coach" who told me that Lacerte does not currently offer a similar analysis. This analysis is EXTREMELY helpful when talking with clients who often want to know what tax bracket they are in, how much is left in their current marginal tax bracket, and what the next tax bracket will be. I realize that Lacerte has the Tax Planner module, but this UltraTax analysis is automatic and less formal. It is very valuable in situations where the client just wants some quick information on their tax bracket but preparing a formal tax projection is not necessary.
NY requires sole member LLCs to complete a NY IT-204-LL so they can nab a $25 nuisance fee on a pass-through entity. This worked fine last year, when the bank debit info and check box was on the Misc Info/Direct Deposit screen. For 2023, it's no longer on that screen, but they offer a nice little button to jump to state and local taxes, where they moved it. Under state and local you can find two screens for it instead of one.The jump button isn't on the NY direct deposit page where you announce it was moved... so that's bug #1You have to click a MANDATORY button on the "New York Other Separate SMLLC IT-204-LL" screen to say that you have a disregarded entity. Again - mandatory. On the second screen - for e-payment - If you check the e-payment box, you get a critical error that you have to pay via direct debit. The error screen shows the check box and electronic debit words in red - as though it's not checked - but it is.If you uncheck the mandatory box, the error about electronic payment goes away, but you can't e-file because Proconnect won't generate the IT-204-LL form unless the Mandatory box is checked. If you look at the NY-IT-204-LL letter in forms, even with the e-payment box checked, the letter talks about mailing in your payment. This mess needs to be fixed. I have a dozen of these due in two days, and there's no extension for it.I also have no confidence the debit will occur if I e-file the return by overriding the errant error since the letter indicates it expects the client to mail a check. This is a nightmare on the level of depreciation. 🙎
I believe that if a client has a PIN in a previous return, it should be flagged in the new return. It would save time with rejections.
This form generates the tax credit for a heat pump system.I searched for it by number, and there's no form. But there was a place to add an override amount. I entered it, and it enters it on form IT-201-ATT properly, and then carries it over to the return. But the override creates a critical error stating the form is required, but you don't have it.I'm trying a workaround: I downloaded the form from NYS Tax. I attached the completed form in Proconnect, but it's not on the list of attachments, so I picked something else. What we needThis energy saving credit is a big deal: we need form IT-267This should then be added to the available forms attachment listWe should have the ability to attach an "Other form" not in the drop list. It's scary to say that I've been doing this for 36 years. I've never encountered one of the forms in the NY attachment drop down. So those seem far less relevant.
The schedule D totals incorrectly when a wash sale and accrued market discount are entered on the same line item. This should be resolved. It is extremely easy to miss and I'm sure a number of people were filed incorrectly because of this. Jacob Bartek

Please let us know if there is a critical update required BEFORE I attempt to E-File a batch of clients. It's ridiculous to have a whole batch of E-File clients reject when the program could easily let me know not to proceed until a critical update is installed.I know this isn't an issue with the cloud service, but I tried that and did not like it (and it was too expensive).
