Notes are going away... Now we have to have permanent Comments

This message popped up today. Comments are year specific, and notes get carried over. If Notes goes away, then we have to have the ability to make Permanent Comments that carry year to year.

Removing the permanent Notes feature has created a real gap in our workflow. Our team depends on year‑to‑year notes to store key client details that don’t change and are essential for preparing accurate returns. Without something that carries forward, it becomes much easier to miss important context.

We rely on these notes to track the different services we provide for each client—payroll, bookkeeping, entity returns, and more. This helps staff quickly understand a client’s full profile, especially newer team members, and prevents unnecessary outreach to clients.

Support confirmed that comments won’t carry forward and would need to be manually copied each year, which is not realistic with tax season approaching.

We need either the original Notes feature restored or a replacement that preserves information across years during proforma.

Per the moderator:   "More updates are to come on timeline of release and persistent comments across tax years."

Tax season is here, NOW.  How do we know which comments will be "persistent comments" or will all comments carry-forward?  Clarification is needed so we can get to work with efficiency!

I agree with Braden and Jared, having notes that carry forward is essential for keeping everyone aligned across tax years. Losing that feature slows us down and increases the risk of missing important client information.

@Kathi_at_Intuit Any chance we can have an update on the persistent comments across tax years? People are now realizing how big of a detriment this is to their workflows. It's only going to get worse the more and more files we work on.

Hi @Quack_Shot Thanks for the tag. We do not have any update as of yet, however the feedback has been given to the right team. We will post an update when we have one.

Make a way for us to keep notes about each client return that are PRIVATE to the preparers!! This is insane that I can't keep notes in the returns anymore that the clients can't see!!!  And also carrying to future years in one place!! Are you serious?!!!

@eflemin1 I don't use Link, but clients can see Comments? Really?

@Quack_Shot

With Notes, that was just for the preparer, but you could also comment to the client/they to you on any item in the questionnaire or document uploads.  So it's nice to have a record/alert of our notes to the client, but critical to be able to keep private client notes that carry to future years within the returns as well. So now we have lost that (clearly they didn't ask a tax preparer if it was a good idea).

I prefer Notes over Comments 100%. I hate the Comments feature.

I completely agree.  The old notes were only okay, but the new comments is horrible.  We need better.
