Requesting a refund of an Estimated Tax Payment

I have an individual who made a 2026 estimated tax payment online with the IRS in the amount of $6500 for an IRA distribution they withdrew in June 2026. The broker also paid the $6500 estimated tax payment from their distribution which they cannot correct at this time. The individual would like to request a refund NOW vs waiting until their 2026 Tax Return is filed next year. The individual is asking if IRS Form 843 Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement can be used for 2026 refund requests? I have only completed this form when requesting the abatement of penalties and interest due to reasonable cause on returns already filed. I have never used this form for future tax years. Does anyone know how to request a refund of an estimated payment for 2026 or is it even possible? I have tried to reach the IRS office but been put on hold for hours and then disconnected.

Feedback is welcome. Thanks!

They are just going to have to be patient and wait for a refund when their 2026 return is filed.  But then again, as long as the tax is paid in, they could think about taking an additional withdrawal this year as long as they have tax paid in to cover it.

IRonMaN thanks for the response. I can suggest to take another distribution but it would most likely put the taxpayer in a higher tax bracket which would not be a good outcome as then once you pay the tax to the IRS you never get it back……………….

Clients like that make you glad you’re not a dentist and having to answer questions about getting the toothpaste back in the tube.  Or a travel agent trying to explain what “nonrefundable” means on a ticket.

Has the broker explained why the company can’t adjust the amount withheld, since Form 945 is only filed annually and we’re not quite halfway through the year?
