LLC Partnership Disolution & Final Tax Filing

Hi Intuit Community,

I have two clients dissolving their partnership. I read everywhere, including the IRS that they need to file their taxes and close their business.  They asked their lawyer and he said the same. We are in California and don't want to wait until Feb 2024 to close the business when they are done now, especially with the $800 incurred if they get into 2024.  I believe there's a short-year tax return that companies can file.  If the software for TY 2023 isn't out, how do I file their taxes for this year during this year? Please help!  Thanks so much for your time.

You can always extend the short year end and wait for the 2023 software to come out before preparing the return.  If not, you have to file on paper using the 2022 software, crossing off the 2022 dates on the forms and writing in 2023.

And they can pay you now so they can deduct the fee on the short year return.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, both of you.
