Question

Why didn't payments to states get paid for the balance due that were scheduled in Pro Series when efiled?

We scheduled payments for a client for two nonresident states, Georgia and Arizona, when the returns were prepared and electronically filed. Returns were electronically filed and accepted on 3/13/2026. The payments were scheduled for 4/1/2026. The client has received balance due notices from each of these states indicating that they owe the balance plus additional penalties/interest. One of the states indicated the check they received in payment was returned by the bank. The client received their refund by direct deposit from IRS and the state of Missouri, therefore, the account information in the client’s pro series file is accurate. The bank has no record of the amount being processed and rejected. The balances due were insignificant and would not have caused his bank account to go below zero.

And why did client not notice before August?  Too wealthy to have to check their bank account?

The more I know the more I don’t know.

He is a young person who is actually working his way through minor league sports. He had procrastinated passing the notices along to me, which I believe is common. Not worth client shaming since he believed he had taken care of the liabilities. And not really the conversation I am looking for. I am mostly perplexed by why the payments didn’t happen when there is no apparent explanation based on data entry and acceptance of the returns. Should I continue to recommend scheduling payments with electronic filing?  Based on this experience, it makes me believe there is a glitch that makes the convenience unreliable.

Call support to see if they can shed any light on the issue.  Personally, I don’t trust Intuit  with this process so I don’t like being the person responsible for the payments.  For those clients that are capable, have them do the online payments themselves.

There is a very simple explanation for that ………………………… well there should be but nobody here is going to be able to provide it.  But for the record, I do like Susan’s answer. 😀

Me too. I always remind my clients to check with their bank the day the pull is scheduled and the days after just in case this happens so they can make other arrangements. The state system could have been overwhelmed that day and crashed or because they were non-resident states maybe that is what killed the pull. Did you check if those states have any nonresident filing issues. Since you are saying the balances due are insignificant just tell them to pay it and use it as a learning experience.

this “I always remind my clients to check with their bank the day the pull is scheduled and the days after just in case this happens so they can make other arrangements”  @DebbieG  just a good practice.

Thank you. I agree with you. I will tell you that we have scheduled many payments for clients the past two tax years for their convenience and due to the less reliable USPS, and we have NOT had this happen. I came here to see whether anyone else had a similar experience and whether any systemic issues had been identiified. One of the notices indicated “the check was returned by the bank for insufficient funds.” I am investigating whether that could have been the case even with knowledge of client’s payroll being directly deposited to the account and plenty of assets in a related broker account. I am skeptical and believe there is a missing link somewhere along the way. I will keep you posted if any conclusion can be made.
