Question

We couldn't direct deposit your 2025 Form 1040 refund

TP received this IRS letter in the mail. I verified that banking info on the return was same as successfully used for last 3 years…. The letter goes on to say he has 30 days to update his banking info or create an account with id.me….(TP is 85YO so, not a chance.

Does anyone know next step in IRS procedure? Will they mail a letter he can update or provide banking info?

IMO, the issue is/was caused by his bank and he should have a ‘conversation’ with them. Concern is that even if he updates his info (with no changes) that it will happen again.

The easiest option is to do nothing and patiently wait a few weeks for the refund check to come.  But that doesn’t mean someone can’t harass the bank.

Thanks… I am under the impression that there may be a few more steps this year before check issuance as a result of the exec order.

No extra steps required.  We had one that went the patience route.  Got the letter, ignored it, and the check came without any additional effort.
