Question

Super busy

So IronWoman e-mailed a client a week and a half ago with a few questions on their schedule C.  She gets an e-mail this morning saying "sorry, but we've been super busy" and goes on to answer "some" of the questions.  Thank goodness that someone has been busy in the area because we have been bored stiff just hoping he would get back to us so that we would have had something to do for the last week and a half.  After doing it for a bit, pulling the wings off of flies can only keep you occupied for so long.  Hopefully the rest of you out in Intuit land aren't too bored at this time of year.

Or the ones who give you preliminary information on April 12 and then say they are leaving for vacation the next day.

Is it just me or are Tax Professionals extremely busy but under appreciated!!! It is all about each client individually and they can't see past the other Hundreds of clients you are trying to deal with!!! At the end we are burnt out, if you are a client whom procrastinates (Not my problem) We need to self medicate, if that is Fire Ball(Iron Man) or a relaxing vacation in the mountains that is our prerogative!!

Cheers to us ALLLL!!!!!

I love the call that comes in 2 days after April 15th - I hope you had time to rest... I have a question about ....

Really, when did I rest?  I am lucky I can still speak.  Leave me alone for more than two days!!!  Clients are selfish and say they appreciate you... but do they really?

Except for 4 family members waiting on huge trust K-1 for extensions, I've been done since Friday.  Heart-rate finally getting back to normal.

2028 we have both Leap Year and April 15th falls on a Saturday so we get 3 extra days to work that year.

"2028 we have both Leap Year and April 15th falls on a Saturday so we get 3 extra days to work that year."

That's assuming we are still alive ---------------------- or not in prison for strangling a client for dropping off stuff on the 12th and then saying they are leaving the next day.

You do realize Jim-From-Ohio did all 52,773,000 returns by professional himself.

I've been good this year.. haven't posted how many returns I have completed already as I know the pushback follows. .but I did mention how many on extensions I have.  Very happy with ProSeries again this year.. looking forward to the phone call with them that they extended to us to discuss the program and suggestions..

My most pressing need/desire from ProSeries is to have the all the forms, as long as IRS has final forms by start of tax day ready to go.

I did not call tech support once this year.

So that really is my only request.. forms ready to go on day one.

I've been doing crosswords over here, picking the fleas off the dog!  Not really, the dog would fire me if he had fleas.

I've read most of the responses, and I've got to say you guys are SO SO nice!!  I've been doing this for decades - started when I was 5.  My clients know, you bring me stuff the last week, maybe the last 2 weeks, you may be looking at an extension, "you owe last year, you can pay with your extension or expect a penalty if you DO end up owing - your choice."  Believe me, my clients know I bend over backwards for them.  I answer calls no matter where I am because most of the time, it takes 2 minutes to answer.  But they also know our family has a family business and I have a special needs child that requires a lot of my time, and up until a couple of years ago I homeschooled our daughter who is now going to college to be a veterinarian and I helped take care of my grandparents, not to mention serving for various community non profits.  So my clients know poor planning on their part does not mean an emergency on mine.

I say all that to say, yes sometimes we need to use this forum just to vent, but in case your having a hard time with this, its ok to tell your clients you are not going to drive yourself to an early grave just for them.  We're already probably driving ourselves to an early grave for the collective, but you don't have to do it for one client.  It's ok to say no.  Just for those that need someone's permission, now you have it.

I love your line: "So my clients know poor planning on their part does not mean an emergency on mine".  Well said!

Many years ago a client brought info in on Monday, April 13. I told him we would work on it and probably extend it, and he approved.

We finished the next day, called him and he said he'd be in the next day, but didn't come in.

We extended it. Why bother?

Just when you thought you were done - wealthy client died. All assets in a trust. Instead of distributing to the beneficiaries directly, 18 sub-trusts were created, all with payments and tax returns due tomorrow. Why do lawyers make the simple so complex?

Because they are lawyers!!  It seems that's their job.

Small 990 client calls IronWoman this morning.  New treasurer for the entity that their 990 was originally due March 15th.  She has been "really busy" and is learning Quickooks and asks IronWoman if she can look at her Quickbooks file before her board meeting tonight.  As Bill Engvall would say ----------------- here's your sign!

As many of you know, I have never taken an accounting course in my life, so to find gainful employment after April 15 I had to go to law school, and now I do a lot of estate planning and probate work because (with rare exceptions) I haven't taken any new clients for 20 years, and I'm just trying to survive the old ones.

I make sure to tell all my clients that they're not allowed to die before April 15, but one of them didn't make it.  The widow called to report his demise on Sunday, with of course a long narrative about his final days.  That's why I have a sympathetic assistant who patiently listens to such stories.  And passes along the standard advice:  Nothing has to be done right now, except the mortuary arrangements.  We'll get back to you later this week.

Surviving spouse is much younger but recently retired, so after this year may be a nonfiler.  The husband was still working, a W-2 job he could do from home with just a computer, telephone and decades of experience.  Sort of like preparing tax returns.

Hey BobKamman, I have my business degree with a major in Accounting, minor in law, sat for the Exam, keep up with my CPE each year, but the man that taught me about tax returns and more importantly how to deal with the IRS was a real estate agent who started doing returns for his out of state RE clients.  And more power to you and your assistant, the older my clients get the more I deal with that stuff.  I actually had a friend pass away last year and am so thankful I have her attorney to reach out to when I or her parents have issues with her estate.  Because it's normally "I think .  .  . "🙄
