Do you know why sometimes routing & account number appear in the refund section of form 1040 and sometimes they do not (only XXX) ? Is there a way to make them appear all the time ? Thanks

They only appear if its a direct deposit of a refund, they show all XXXX when youve chosen direct debit or refund check, because direct debit isnt allowed on the printed/mailed in 1040, and refund check would be no need for the bank info to appear.

Oh it may show all XXX if youve chosen to mark sensitive data too...I dont use masking so Im not sure what it includes.

I have direct deposit of state tax refund and direct debit of federal tax payment. Wouldn't they show up in this case ?

On the state return, yes. Not on the federal return since its a direct debit.
