ProSeries 2025 Form 1041 for fiscal year and short year

I efiled an initial Form 1041 with a 1/31/26 fiscal year end using the 2025 ProSeries forms.  The estate has a short year ending 6/30/26. May I use the 2025 ProSeries Form 1041 for the 2026 short year?  If so, how do I transfer the first year to the second year, since they are both using 2025 forms?

Nope.  You are only allowed one e-file per client per year.  You will need to paper file using the 2025 software - cross off the 2025 on the forms and write 2026.

Paper filing makes me shudder as we know how slow the IRS is when processing paper returns.  Even though all of the assets were distributed in June, are we allowed to use a 1/31/2027 year-end so the 2nd (and final) return may be efiled with the 2026 forms?

Technically, the estate ended in June and the return would be required to be filed with that year end.  If you tend to run with scissors now and then, it would be up to you and the client to decide if you wanted to wait and file with the 1/31/27 year end.

You wont be able to roll it to the same year, you wont be able to EFile it either.

Thanks, Lisa.  I would love your input on the follow-up question:
