New question on page 1 of Form 1040

This question is on page 1 of Form 1040

"Check here if your main home, and your spouse’s if filing a joint return, was in the U.S. for more than half of 2025."

The only other place I see this question is with EIC calculation - this does not apply to all clients, therefore it is not requiring an answer & the box is not getting checked on the 1040.

Proseries, if this is a required box by IRS - please adjust program to force an answer so that is not omitted

Thank you

This one? its always been there, not new   Or is there another spot too?

Oh, you want it to be a forced fill in, so you have to check one of the other?

Hi-

Yes, I agree for EIC - however NOW it is on pg 1 of the 1040 - not the EIC section which leaves me to believe they want everyone to answer.  It's not forcing me to answer.  I feel that they are looking for an answer & Proseries  needs an entry on the info worksheet requiring an answer to ensure a correct & complete return.

Ahhh, ok I see what you mean   So you think that box on the 1040 needs to be checked for every return even if they dont have EIC?

I tried to use the Help button n that check box, but it gives me nothing.

Edit : 1040 instructions on pg 6 are in support of credits. Not mandatory answer

Here’s a quick AI reply.  Does the pg 1 checkmark populate when any of the following apply?

On the2025 Form 1040, this checkbox is required when you are seeking to establish eligibility for specific tax benefits that depend on U.S. residency.
  • Eligibility for Credits: It is primarily used by the Internal Revenue Service to determine if you qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC), which requires your main home to be in the U.S. for more than half of the year.
  • Filing Status Verification: The box helps verify requirements for the Head of Household filing status, which mandates you paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for a qualifying person in the U.S..
  • Energy & Other Credits: It serves as a residency verification for benefits like the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and the Child Tax Credit, ensuring you meet the "principal place of abode" criteria.
  • Identifying Foreign Residents: For U.S. citizens or residents living abroad (expats), checking this box confirms whether they still maintained a U.S. residence for the majority of the tax year despite being overseas.

So, I guess the question is, will it auto populate when you check something else in the program?

I see it does for EIC...I think the due diligence worksheets we have for HOH and CTC do have questions related to US residency, do those worksheet answers automatically make that box checked?  I'll have to play around with it and see.

dsteincpa,

I called proseries help to ask this very same question.  The person on the other end could not figure it out.

We were on the phone for a long time and

I got no where.

Proseries,  if this is a required box by IRS-please adjust program to force and answer so that is not omitted.  Last thing I want is the IRS sending letters to taxpayers because this box was not answered.
