new 1040 checkbox for MFS OR HOH

I'm confused is this box required to be checked if filing status is HOH? Just wondering if I.R.S. will hold return if not checked or marked as incomplete.

    yes check only if lived apart from  spouse for last 6 months but according to ITA assistant a Single person also qualifies as HOH

    But they are only looking for the answer to that question.  The answer can affect certain credits or deductions.
