Louisiana Nonresident Allocation – Federal Amounts Flowing to LA and Cannot Zero Without E-File Error

I’m working in ProSeries Professional 2025 on a Louisiana nonresident individual return and running into an allocation issue I can’t resolve without creating e-file errors.

Here’s the situation:

  • Federal return is completed and accepted.
  • Preparing a Louisiana nonresident return (IT-540B).
  • Federal information properly flows to the Louisiana return.
  • However, income items such as:
    • Capital gains (small stock sale)
    • Rental real estate income (Schedule E)

are automatically flowing into the Louisiana column even though they are NOT Louisiana-sourced income.

When I go to the NPR Allocation Worksheet:

  • If I enter 0 in the Louisiana column for those items, the field turns red and generates an error.
  • If I override the amount to zero, the error clears, but then ProSeries disallows e-filing because overrides are present.
  • The federal column is marked as “automatically calculated” and cannot be changed.
  • The Louisiana column will not accept zero without triggering a diagnostic.

So I’m stuck in a loop:

  • Leave the federal-sourced income in Louisiana → incorrect return.
  • Enter zero → diagnostic error.
  • Override to zero → cannot e-file.

Has anyone successfully resolved this without using overrides?

Is there a specific input location (Schedule D, Schedule E, allocation percentage area, state use checkbox, etc.) that properly designates income as non-Louisiana sourced so it allocates correctly?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
