Question

Is it just me, or is this tax season shaping up to be the Tax Season from Hell

Between the poorly implemented 'no tax on overtime' without mandatory box 14 reporting, the over-hyped 'no tax on tips', the new vehicle interest deduction with VIN reporting requirements - but no form 1098-VLI in 2025 -, and the gratuitous requirement for a Qualified Manufacturer Product Identification Number (PIN) for a credit being discontinued anyway, there's going to be a mess of calls, questions and missing information to follow up on. On top of that, many more people will be itemizing again due to the SALT deduction increase, and myriads of questions explaining why their Social Security is still being taxed, at least sorta. It is giving me flashbacks of the 2020 tax year in the winter of 2021 when we were still in semi-lockdown, the mail was weeks and weeks behind, and congress passed retroactive tax changes in mid-March, while IRS dragged its feet in extending the deadline.

I predict another wave of early retirements from tax accountants this year, similar to the post-Covid retirements.

"I predict another wave of early retirements from tax accountants this year"

Or Fireball sales are going to go through the roof this year. 😁

Fireball is a variety of schnapps that is favored by supporters of the US military because the tariffs on Canadian alcohol can help support overseas attacks. It’s basically whiskey with cinnamon added. Some people take large doses of cinnamon to prevent diabetes, but Fireball is not recommended for this. It used to be made with propylene glycol, the same ingredient found in windshield cleaning fluid, but the formula was changed when European countries banned its sale.

You're right, it sounds way too much like work to me.  I am asking clients just to send me some money and then go to H&R Block.

I look at it as an excellent challenge and an opportunity.

You sound like an immigrant.  Better watch out for ICE.  Especially with that rice burner you drive.

it's the tax season I really really will raise my rates...far too reasonable for too long (even when a couple clients say I should increase them!!!!)

Clients received my email not only from last July (get your electric vehicle/home improvements NOW) but this week with my summaries of the 2025 / 2026 tax changes, and now I can 😃🤑😋😋.

BTW, it's legally called "Public Law 119-21" which I'm doing, not the narcissistic nickname being used.  Senate stripped that and did not attach a shorter nickname.

Yes, raising my rates at well. Still too low - mostly multi-decade clients who I'm too loyal to.
