Question

IRS asking for corrected routing and acct number IRS notice CP53E

Hi

I had a client that received a CP53E.  The notice said they couldn't direct deposit refund and taxpayer needed to go on website and give them correct info.

Problem is:  my client owed and the amount due was deducted from their account on April15 and he was due no refund.  I double checked his routing and account number and it was correct as filed.

Has anyone else had this happen to their client?

I have been seeing several people saying they received a letter but had no refund. It might be automated and going out to anyone that doesn't have an account linked to their account. I would advise them to just disregard.

Do you ask the clients if the IRS notice has a QR code?

I had a client with the same notice.  And yes, she owed and the software had computed underpayment penalty because she forgot to pay her 9/15 quarterly estimate until December.

I had read that this is a form that scammers are exploiting.  I told her do NOT respond to the notice and DON'T scan the QR code but go online to her IRS Online account and confirm that IRS has her correct routing and account number.  Yes, her Online account showed the correct bank information and yes, the CP53E notice showed up in her notices online.

We waited and a few weeks later a check showed up refunding the penalty that the software had computed. Go figure... the IRS refunded a penalty without formally requesting an abatement.

Good luck!

I would ask if her ZIP Code is in a declared disaster area, but then you would say you don't have any disasters, and I would ask where you are, and then if you answered I would have to provide a list of nearby disasters  . . .

Or, maybe there is another explanation, like she had paid 100% of prior year tax and that amount didn't get rolled over or entered.  IRS doesn't abate penalties for no reason, although they don't assess it if it's under $100 and lots of practitioners still allow the software to compute it.

We just got through to the IRS due to 3 of these letters being received so far and have the following to report (hope it helps):

  • the letter is legit
  • 2 of the notices were due to estimated payments sent by clients that we didn't report.
  • 1 was due to an amended return that is not processed yet. In the case of the amended return, the client does owe that amount sent but since the amendment has not been processed the IRS doesn't realize it.
  • If clients don't go online to update their banking within 30 days, paper checks will be mailed out 6-8 weeks later.
  • To update banking they go to their IRS account (if they have one), go to Profile at the top of the page then Update Banking on the left.
