IL Preparer EIN Required for e-file

Hello, I get the following error message for an individual 2025 Illinois return, “The Preparer FEIN is required for e-file.” I am a sole proprietor and do not have a firm employer identification number. In the firm/preparer section under Options, I left the firm EIN field blank and checked self-employed in my preparer section with SSN entered. Is this a glitch or am I missing something? Thank  you.

Are you sure the error says FEIN, or is it EFIN, also in preparer section you should put PTIN, and leave SS number blank in addition in the preparer section there is no firm EIN only firm number IE firm 1, firm 2 ETC

Terry, Thanks for your response. Yes, the error specifically states, “The Preparer Firm FEIN is required for e-file.”  PTIN is properly entered in the Preparer section. Firm # and Preparer Codes are properly entered. I tried leaving Preparer SSN blank (as you noted) but still receive the error message. For the same taxpayer, I do not get the error for her CA return.

@drbdrb Even if this is an “unexpected behavior” in Intuit speak, it’s 2026 and you’re plastering your SSN all over the place? Get an EIN. It takes about 3 minutes online.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

IL does not require a self employed tax preparer to have an EFIN. They do require you to have an EFIN and PTIN if you prepare taxes for a fee. You must have an error in the software. You should do all normal trouble shooting steps, and try again.

I think were mixing up EFIN and FEIN.

yes Lisa, just a typo FEIN not required. EFIN is required for E-File ( EFIN is 6 digits FEIN is 9 digits)

Hi @drbdrb we wanted to give you an update. Our Support team is currently investigating this issue. They are reviewing the Illinois e-file business rules to determine whether those requirements are causing the error to trigger.

In the meantime, we've been advised that you can work around the error by entering your SSN in Tools > Options > Firm/Preparer Info > Firm Information > Employer ID# (EIN).
