Interesting reading from MN Revenue this morning.  Is the guy really stupid or just lazy?   If you are going to cheat, wouldn't you at least change the numbers a couple of bucks here and there? 😲

Prior Lake tax preparer charged with 42 tax crimes

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced that the Scott County Attorney’s Office recently charged Kraig Joseph Haenke, of Prior Lake, with 42 felony counts of aiding or assisting in the preparation of false or fraudulent individual tax returns.

According to the complaint, Mr. Haenke has been a licensed Certified Public Accountant since 2007, and understands that as a tax preparer, he is responsible for filing accurate tax returns. The complaint alleges that Mr. Haenke filed multiple tax returns for his clients between 2019 and 2023 that contained information that he knew was false. According to the complaint, department investigators determined that multiple returns that Mr. Haenke submitted on behalf of his clients contained the same numbers being used for expense deductions year over year for the same taxpayer and the same specific numbers reoccurring across all the filed returns for multiple taxpayers. Other deductions such as non-cash charitable donations and home office deductions were allegedly found to be at the max deduction or at thresholds where additional documentation is required.

Department investigators interviewed 12 of his clients who all stated that they did not provide Mr. Haenke records or information for one or more items that were found on their returns.

A review of all returns filed by Mr. Haenke for tax years 2019 through 2021 found statistically improbable commonalities across all returns. Mr. Haenke allegedly admitted that he was overwhelmed and rushing through return preparation.

Who told you that my real name is Kraig Joseph Haenke, of Prior Lake?  🤣

LOL; I was thinking about posting about that one too, but you beat me to it.

In SLIGHT defense of the same numbers, he said he was overwhelmed and may have just wanted things to be as simple as possible and entered the same numbers (or just listened to the taxpayer when they said "same as last year").  Of course I'm definitely not saying it was right, but it MIGHT reflect him trying to save brain-power rather than a desire to cheat.

On the other hand, some of the other things he did could reflect more ill-intent.

I just Googled him and it was interesting.  Some complaints about being audited and him disappearing, it looks like he and his wife opened a coffee shop after he was caught (I wonder how tax-compliant the coffee shop has been) and that he may have been arrested a few days ago due to the tax fraud investigation.

Personally, I love that the state frequently sends these emails about how they are prosecuting tax fraud (most are taxpayers, often with sales tax fraud, but some like this are about tax preparers).

It's one thing to say "same as last year" for rent, but it gets a little iffy when everything becomes "same as last year". 😁

My first boss used to tell the story that when he first started out, there was a tax preparer in the same building as the CPA firm that he was working for.  He said the guy used to have a phone book on his desk and he would pull random names out of the phone book for client expenses and donations.  Maybe Kraig is the grandson of that preparer.  😃

Local tax preparer used to advertise “25% larger refunds.”
When his practice mysteriously closed, I asked one of his former clients if he still donated 30% of his earnings to charity.

If at first you don’t succeed…..find a workaround

"Local tax preparer used to advertise “25% larger refunds.”"

Sounds like he watched a lot of commercials for national tax preparation companies. 😬
