How to get checkbox completed for individual who is head of household, still married but living apart from spouse? There is a new checkbox on the 1040, hard to access.

I have a couple, technically still married, but living apart. The husband is filing MFS, in the review steps there is a place to check the box that they are living apart. For the wife, she has the kids, provides more than half support, and files as HOH, but there is nowhere apparent to check that new checkbox that they are still married but living apart. Is this a problem? Should I attach a statement that these are the circumstances since I can't check the box?

It is not particularly easy, but you need to be on the "1040 Wks" (you can open the 1040 and double-click on a line and it should open the "1040 Wks".

On the "1040 Wks" it lets you manually check the box.

It's not particularly intuitive, but you can get it done that way.

For HOH thats part of the Due Diligence questions in the HOH worksheet on the 8867, I dont think its on the actual 1040 anywhere

There is a new checkbox on the 1040. The due diligence answers don't help you check that box. But another answer helped to point me to the 1040 worksheet where you can do it. Thanks!

Do you think its meant for HOH or just MFS?

It's for either filing status.

Actually there have been a number of questions this year about those check boxes but this is the first time I have seen a post where the boxes actually apply to their client.
