how to amend 2 states for correct residency status

new client in 2024 - when reviewing 2023 return I see that the entire return is basically incorrect. Most of the errors will be easy to fix but the prior accountant who was only used in 2023 had her as a resident of New Jersey using her 2nd home address as her primary residency and did a nonresident New York return.

She is and always has been a NYC resident. Not sure how to amend it from a NY-203 to a NY-201 in proseries. Will just doing the 201 as a full year resident and nyc full year resident override the non- resident return. I can't get the 201-x to work right now as there is no 201 return.

I think NJ will work just switching the status on the info worksheet.

Any thoughts? I have a call into NYS but my friend google says just do the 201, explain and mail

I don't do NY, but until I got to what our mutual friend Google said, I was thinking I would just to the 201 and include an explanation.

update - NYS says to do the IT-201 - it will get looked at because the IT-203 is on file. Can send along a note why filing with the return but would most likely get a letter anyway that would need to be responded to.

If you have the incorrect IT203 set up in Proseries as filed, you can activate IT-201X to make the amendment. and then make whatever other changes you need to.... Income info should transfer correctly once you select correct county/school district info.   On it-201-x page 6 they as reason for amending.  Select N - Other and tell them it was incorreclty filed as IT-203.  Should be able to efile .... but w/ Proseries... one never knows.... do one?

edit.. note... once you activate the IT-201X you have to go back to the NY info worksheet and make appropriate changes...I tried one and it seems to werk pretty well. .
