I need help!!!! I have a client that works overseas. W2 box 1 is 134950. I have a paper saying Income tax paid $30454 in Guyana (foreign country). I'm getting tripped up on what figures to put on the 1116. If I put his full amount from box 1 of W2, he's getting like $16,000 back from IRS. If I put the $30,454 he owes a little. I've researched soo much on this & I'm getting different answers. Can someone help explain what I need to do & what figures go where please?

You put the income taxed by Guyana in Line 1a of the 1116.

You put the tax paid to Guyana on Part II

Make sure you are making any necessary conversions to US dollars.

The 1116 purpose is to give a credit  for tax paid to another country on income that is taxed by the US and that country.

Get out the instructions, print the form and work thru it line by line by hand to learn how it works. I'd say your research so far has not been very good.

The more I know the more I don’t know.
