Hi: I have a us taxpayer filing a 1040. He is employed overseas by an foreign employer that has no U.S. EIN. Tried inputting 99-999999; no luck. .Efiling through Lacerte is rejected with error message FW2-502.  Workaround?

Must I file with paper return?

You can't e-file if there is no EIN, but you can file on paper without it.

Why aren't you entering information on Form 2555 or the Foreign Earned Income worksheet? No EIN is required.

Maybe client doesn't qualify for foreign earned income exclusion. ForeignUS is frequently an option for the EIN.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Which software are you using?  You have under the ProSeries section and have it tagged as ProSeries, but then you said e-filing through Lacerte.

Bless you.  I have been trying to fix this problem for 2 weeks.  It was a young teen Disneyland subcontractor overseas !!   I spent more fees on fixing this, that taxpayer made.
