Extended filing deadline due to weather?

A new client living in the Nashville area, has an extended filing deadline of June 8th due to Winter Storm Fern.

Apparently the IRS extended the deadline to May 22 and then expanded and extended the deadline to June 8th.

Question: can client apply for a normal extension which I think would extend filing to October 15th and pay any tax due with that extension? Additionally, Client would like to open and fund a SEP IRA (which she qualifies for) and include funding the SEP in her tax filing. Is this doable?

Thanks!

If your client lives in an area declared a disaster area if filed by disaster due date no penalty if your client owes. If you filed a 4868 then I would think if client paid and filed by disaster area due date there would be no penalty, but if filed and paid after disaster due date no matter you filed a 4868 a penalty would apply.

As for the SEP here is the IRS rule.

Is there a deadline to set up a SEP?

You can set up a SEP plan for a year as late as the due date (including extensions) of your business's income tax return for that year.

You wont be able to EFile it, youd have to send on paper.

You should write something across the top that refers to the current disaster extension you fall under.

@Just-Lisa-Now- Why could above not be E-Filed ?

electronically filed tax returns will be accepted until December 26. Refer to the November 2025 QuickAlerts message for details.

I'm pretty sure Lisa was talking about e-filing the extension, not the return.
