Employment expenses for police officers and firefighters

Police officers and firefighters often make purchases that are not reimbursed by their employers; however these items are necessary for the job.  They also use their personal cell phones for business as they need to be accessible at all times.  Since the changes in the tax law, it appears there is no way to write off any of these expenses.  Any suggestions?

They can lobby their union to get expense reimbursement put into their next contract.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

some states still allow it, like California, but you have to itemize and those expenses have to exceed 2% of your AGI before it any of it counts, so its usually a moot point.

yeah - it is not deductible on the federal return - my suggestion would be to follow the law and not look for a work around

ny deductible over the 2% and beats the standard deduction
