efile problems with mentally ill client

Hi folks,  I have a client who has a serious personality disorder - narcissism (I am also a licensed psychotherapist who took over my Dad's accounting business when he retired) ; and this  person is making my nearly bald head hair turn more gray. Ex client reported the IRS did not have a record of receiving her tax files from me so I re-filed electronically approximately 2 months after the initial filing which was filed prior to April 15th, 2025.  Ex-client contacted the IRS and the IRS, as would be expected, advised the ex-client that the return was never filed. Accountants are generally very smart people, and this material misrepresentation by the IRS was taken literally by my ex-client, now threatening to sue me because the IRS said I didn't file her return. She had been a client for about 5 years and, I had filed her adult children's taxes in the same appointment and, of course, all her children's efiles were accepted and refunds paid. Ex-client is incapable of understanding the reasoning behind the IRS not receiving and not filing (client has been fired from just about every job she has ever had as a nurse because of her personality disorder). So, is there a way to retrieve a record for both the original filing attempt and the subsequent refile somewhere in my ProSeries program?   Many thanks, Dr. rob

Do you have the third party designee authorization checked yes on the original return? If so, call the practitioner hotline at 866 860-4259 from 7 to 7 local time. HINT: if you live to the Western area of the country call after the other time zones are after 7 pm.

What do you mean you re-filed?  Are you saying you amended or superseded the return?

In answer to your question, open the file and look for Form 9325.  That shows the e-file acceptance information.

Another thing you can look at is when on Homebase, single-click the client, then RIGHT click the client file to get the option to view the e-file history.

I canot understand why you cant prove that the tax return was filed and accepted. You should have q copy of the retur and infact it is the aw that that you keep a copy for 3 years after the doo date. And with pro series you get a reply that the return was accepted and on what date it was accepted and there is your proof. If the tax return was not ever mark accepted    then action should have been taken a long time ago.I donot aim to offend [Removed]

the problem seems to have occurred when the file was copied and resubmitted ( as advised by Intuit). The re-filing seems to have deleted the original electronic filing information. [Removed]

Many responses sided with me. I go out of my way to show appreciation for veitnam Veterns, My response to you had nothing to do with your time in Vietnam. I have met many veterans over the years and I am going to say the samething to you that I have said to them

way too much personal info on the client and not enough information on the tax filing. You should not have been able to e-file the return a second time. If it was filed and accepted you would have received a reject notice that the return was on file. If you did not receive that and the 2nd filing was accepted then the original return was not efiled or not accepted. The accept/reject is from the IRS system. Also the fact that they got notices saying not filed also leads to an issue with the original return. From the efile homebase you can get the efiling history. 

To me it sounds like you efiled and it was rejected and you didn't see it - or you thought you efiled it and you missed it. I've done that - looked at the efiles the next day and say HEY they were here yesterday and signed why didn't I efile? Now I count the efile forms and I make sure I am efiling the same number of files. Stuff happens. Say sorry, efile it and offer to pay the interest.
