Question

Do i just go back and amend the year before due to an adjustment made for prior year on 1098T

I am burnt out with an overflow of tax returns due to the State of NY opening up later this year due to our governor.   This is probably a simple question with a simple solution.

I have a college student on her own, who had college a college credit last year and now again this year and on this years it states in box 4 "adjustments made for a prior year".  Her scholarships were 9000 and the adjustment for the prior year was 1900.  no tuition paid in box1.

I went back to last year and realized she would have owed back $211 to federal and $117 to nys... I see where the amount of $211  would be entered on the 1040 smart work sheet  box E for the federal.  My question is it states from form 8863..

I can't see on that 8863 form where i would have put it first?  and Which nys forn or code do i use to give them back the $177.??

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!

Amend the 2024 returns and file 2025 correctly. I’d tell tp i made a mistake last year, they owe some money. I’ll prepare the amendment after tax season

If at first you don’t succeed…..find a workaround

Yes that is what i first did.... the amendment with out filing it yet.   Then I did some research and the IRS publications state to recapture the amount of taxes due on the current year for the past year on the 1040 line 16C with the code ECR.  ( which comes from the tax smart worksheet #F

I just didn't know if that was the accurate way to go.. or the old fashion amendment for the prior year.
