A daughter tried to file her father's return because her mother was in an institution for the elderly.  The father died before filing 2022 taxes. He left no records or hard to locate records to be used to complete his return. An extension was filed. The mother also died after the extension. Information has been hard to uncover.  What should be done now that the extension is ending?

File with whatever records you can find and then let the family know not to be shocked if they get a notice somewhere down the road.

"Information has been hard to uncover."

The IRS can provide a tax account transcript for everything reported to them for these people for tax year 2022, as well as the prior year(s) filings if no one has that, too. You can get copies of bank statements; I've gotten up to 3 years' back.
