CLIENT RECEIVED IRS NOTICE CP12 INFORMING THEM THAT THEIR REFUND WAS INCREASED DUE TO SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME BEING INCORRECTLY CALCULATED.  I CHECKED THEIR RETURN AND THE FIGURES SEEM TO BE ENTERED CORRECTLY.  ON LINE I NOTICED THAT PRO SERIES HAD A ‘GLITCH’ PERFORMING SOCIAL SECURITY CALCULATIONS FOR SENIORS.  ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE THIS.  MY BASIC EDITION IS UPDATED TO THE LATEST UPDATE AND I DELETED AND RE-ENTERED THE SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME FOR BOTH HUSBAND AND SPOUSE AND STILL CAME OUT WITH THE SAME RESULT THAT THE ORIGINAL RETURN HAD.  NO CHANGE AS OF TODAY, 7/2/26.  I’M CONFUSED AND NOW WONDERING HOW MANY OTHER OF MY CLIENTS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED.

my client received a cp12 asking for form 8962 to support the entry of $65 on line 1 of schedule 3.  that is the line for foreign tax credit, which needs no form 1116 for such a low amount.  chances are good that the program is right and irs, minus 22% of its staff because of a south african immigrant, is wrong.

Literally just got off phone with this issue. I found the problem and the IRS calculations are correct.   Where the Social Security was entered there was a check mark stating the client was Canadian (or something similar) just about the entry for the amounts. I am certain I did NOT check this box but it is showing checked now. I have had similar issues this tax season with boxes either showing as checked for various items OR NOT showing checked where I am certain I have checked them . This has been a HORRIBLE tax season for me as I don’t have the time to manually go back through each individual return and check all the pages/boxes/figures.  What a nightmare!!!!!

PS I do NOT have the basic edition but the highest level offered. This is my  4th year using the software but it just continues to get worse. I don’t know the reason. I would normally trust Intuit completely but NOT this year.

If you Search for Social Security there are several threads about this. Mostly a box about living outside the US was checked by mistake. Emphasis placed on reviewing returns.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Well, I certain did NOT do enough reviewing for issues like this one. As I mentioned, I have now found several places where boxes were or were not checked when they were actually filed as opposed to when I prepared them. I certainly can make mistakes but not generally with such glaring options as these.

all of those posts  involved IRS increasing the tax because the foreign-resident box was incorrectly checked (but apparently this data is not sent as part of the electronic file).  i don’t see much comparison to the situation where IRS increases the refund because the data did not pass the math and consistency checks before it gets to IRS.
