Had the same problem last night.  I just drilling down until I got to the last line of  of theother income page and wrote in "Form 1099-Q Taxable Part

you couldn't offset it with any fees, books, room and board etc. look at the student worksheet

Nope!  Took a huge distribution, not his costs. Not my first rodeo. I probably fill out more than a hundred Student Worksheets a year.   I teach most of my clients to take out the actual costs they incur.  I helped the kid as much as I could with transportation, etc.
