Question

1095A

I have two clients that are under age 26 and their parents are not claiming them as dependents, but they are covered on their parent's 1095A health coverage.  Their parents have submitted an extension for their return.  The IRS has rejected the children's returns claiming they should have a 1095A when they are on the parents 1095A so I have submitted an extension for them as well in hopes that I will be able to file their returns after the parents file their return.  Series Pro has no place for me to say on the 1095A that they are covered by the parents.  Even when I check the box for "no health coverage purchased" and go to ACA explanation and say they covered by the parents the IRS still rejects the returns. Is there a way around this in Series Pro?

I think the normal route is to allocate all of the 1095A costs to the parents and show the 1095A with zeroes on the kids' returns.

You can allocate between the people listed on the 1095A in any way that makes the best sense.

Are you preparing the parents return as well?  If so, this would be an ideal situation to see who benefits the most from the 1095A allocation.

Ive saved parents thousands of dollars in PTC payback by allocating the 1095A to the non-dependent kid(s)

Can you communicate with the parents or the preparer that's doing their return?

I mean if the parents are going to claim 100% of the allocation, you can allocate 0% to the ids, but everyone could be missing out on a better situation if you can have some communication with everyone involved.

If you do allocate 0% to the kids, I think you need to attach the 8962 with Page 2 showing the 0% allocation, be sure to use the ACA Explanation in the attachment box to get it accepted, the program doesnt seem to attach the 8962 with 0% allocation.
