Question

When amending a 1040 should you include the tax payments made after the original return was filed?

I do not see a line for payments made after the return was filed on the 1040. It shows in the 1040X with the correct refund amount. However, should the 1040X refund match the amended 1040 and if so where should I enter the tax payment made after the original return was filed.

Thank you!

Scroll down to the bottom of the 1040X and adjust "Amt. paid w/original & tax paid after filing (Form 1040, line 37)" to include payments made later.

When I enter the amount on that line in the 1040X it gives me the correct total refund, however, do I need to make the new 1040 match? If so, I don’t see the line on the 1040.

I am unclear on your question. The program prefills the what was part of the 1040X (except for this one item you need to adjust). The corrected is generated after you make changes to the data, e.g. more Schedule C deductions and go to the Forms view to see the results of new computation.
