Question About Amended Virginia Form 760PY

Case: I am preparing an amended Virginia Form 760PY because the taxpayer forgot to report interest income from a Treasury bond (Form 1099-INT). When I prepare the amended Virginia return, the net tax change is $0, and the amended return still shows the original $4,000 refund from the previously filed Virginia tax return.

Question: Is there a place on the amended return to indicate that the taxpayer has already received the refund from the original return? I'm concerned that the amended return still displays the same refund amount, and I'm not sure whether this could cause any issues when the Virginia Department of Taxation reviews the amended return.

Thank you for your help!

As I recall, when you amend a VA return you submit a whole, new, correct return and mark it amended. There isn’t a place to say original refund, new refund, etc. VA is supposed to know. I used to attach a statement anyway. Looks like my memory is correct this time. From the instructions:

“To amend Form 760PY, complete a new Form 760PY (for the taxable year you are amending) using the corrected figures, as if it were the original return. Mark the amended box in the Check Applicable Boxes section of the return. Be sure to select one of the provided reason codes to explain why you are submitting an amended return. Do not make any adjustments to the amended return to show that you received a refund or paid a balance due as a result of the original return.”

In the Amended Return screen, you want the bottom-most section, labeled Virginia. Enter an amount in the Overpayment from Original Return field.

Thanks, but I really don't see a line on the Virginia Form 760PY where I can enter this overpayment.

The more I know the more I don’t know.
