Payment done after 1040 extension

TP received an automatic extension of 1040 for 2022 and on the form 4868 mentioned Zero in the column “Amount you are paying with the extension”. In May 2023, the tax payer paid some money online using option “Form 1040 Current Tax Return 2022”. I believe this is equivalent to 1040-V. On 1040 return where should this money appear- Schedule 3 Amount paid with request for extension to file or 2022 Estimated tax payment?

It goes on the line 26 "2022 estimated tax payments and amount applied from 2021 return". Payment on extension cannot be after the filing deadline.

You could put it in either place, or leave it out and show a balance due even if there is none.  IRS is still going to credit the payment to the account.  But your client is most likely to understand the return if you call it an estimated-tax payment.
