Need help bridging from Turbotax to Proconnect

Hello...

I have been using Turbotax for years. I have a few clients that want me to do their taxes as paying clients for the first time, so I thought I needed to make the jump from Turbotax to Proconnect. Primarily so that I can efile for them and monitor for problems going forward. I have watched a few of the tutorials and been on the phone with Proconnect support.

I converted a 2024 Turbotax file and it is currently in Proconnect. I can see the client. Now this is where it gets really messy....

Apparently, "some things" do import from the Turbotax 2024 file and "some things" dont? This is according to support.  The software is nothing like Turbotax in that Proconnect has more of a 1980's look and feel to it (yes, I am that old). Once the client file is imported, there is no ability to "walk through" preparing the return like there is in Turbotax, so I am at a loss how to get a return done inside Proconnect. A little disappointed to say the least. Am I missing something here? I would have thought that a professional tax preparer version was easier to use.

Now the questions...

What resources would anyone suggest to help me bridge the gap here? Tutorials? Even a youtube video walking through an actual tax preparation from beginning to end? I asked Proconnect if there was someone I could pay as a consultant to help me walk through this software since I am a first time user and was informed that doesnt exist.

Any thoughts? Any help?

Thanks-

Frank

I appreciate the reply.... well... to be honest.... before I started googling for support, I thought I would try here and see if someone with experience could share some pointers. Do you use Proconnect? Is it worth it to muscle my way through this and figure this out? I am wondering if I should just go back to Turbotax.

I did look at your google response. There does appear to be one youtube video in there that is about an hour long that me of help. I will watch it and see if it gets me anywhere.

I really appreciate your help-

I don't do ProConnect.  I'm a ProSeries user and I have never dabbled with ProConnect so I'm not much help.  Technically, if you are going to bill for your services, using TurddoTax isn't technically allowed so I would eat some spinach and see if you can muscle your way through.

I haven't used Lacerte since the 90's and Pro Connect is related to Lacerte, not Pro Series or Turbot Tax, so there is little I can add to help you.

Lacerte still requires you to enter "-1" if you want to use a ZERO, so there's that for the 80's.

Whenever converting from/to any software you always have to use a fine toothed comb to check for variances. You will be stuck reviewing.

FYI, even if you didn't "charge" for preparing returns, other than family members, you were still a "paid preparer." It's good you never used TT to "prepare" unrelated people's returns.

Do you have an EFIN for e-filing?  And of course a PTIN?

While there are some professional tax software products that ask questions, a paid tax preparer is supposed to know what questions to ask the clients and how to fill out a tax return, not rely on a program figure out what needs to be done.  It takes A LOT of learning, so jumping to a paid tax preparer isn't something to take lightly.

Professional tax software is designed to prepare many tax returns, not meant for guiding a person for what needs to be done.

Yes to both of your questions. I am also a CFP for 25 years. Lets just say that in 25 years of developing detailed financial plans, I have had a conversation or two with a client. Probably why they have asked for my help with their taxes. Its not these qualifications that limit my ability to use the software. I know what "questions to ask". My issues are in regards to navigating the software. This is NOT a question about taxes or interviewing a client. It sounds like you did not read my post, or you don't know how to ask questions to help out.

But thank you for your concern.

Hi @FrankMMartin03 , as another person pointed out ProConnect is built off of Lacerte's engine (which is our top Professional software) so it is not designed to walk you through the return as TurboTax would.  TurboTax is built for the consumer to be able to do it themselves so it is designed to give the interview questions.  With that said, as a ProConnect user myself and a support agent, my advice would be to visit our  Intuit Accountants Youtube Channel.  That channel has videos for all of our programs on how to enter a basic return.  Another option would be to utilize our ProConnect Help Articles .   Our support agents handle technical support and do not walk you through an actual return start to finish because they are not tax preparers, with the exception of a few of us.  Our support agents can, however, help you if you are unable to find where to enter something or software setup questions: ProConnect Support.
