Question

MFS-spouse is a NRA. How to i enter this in so that it clears the "Spouses Social Security Number is Invalid" efile diag?

  1. Make sure you do not make any entry under General > Client Information for the spouse's SSN;
  2. Under General > Misc. Info./Direct Deposit, click on the Miscellaneous tab; and
  3. Scroll down to the line for Spouse is a nonresident and does not have an SSN/ITIN (MFS Only) and check the box.

    Thank you for responding. This helped - except it spurred a new diagnostic "New York: Spouses Social Security Number Missing"

    I heard somewhere else that CA needs a SSN or ITIN, too.

    The more I know the more I don’t know.
