I am filing a 2025 1040 for a US citizen working abroad. He recently married a German citizen, a/k/a/ NRA to the US. For various reasons the US citizen will be filing MFS.

The dilemma....how to input NRA for the non-resident spouse? The proconnect input will not accept that even where IRS input states:

For MFS returns where the spouse is a nonresident alien (NRA) with no SSN/ITIN, the IRS explicitly instructs taxpayers to:

  • Leave the spouse SSN field blank, and

  • Write “NRA” on the dotted line next to the entry space.

This tells the IRS that the spouse is a nonresident alien and is not required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number for an MFS filing.

HELP?!
