Question

I have a couple that married in 2021, both lived and worked in separate states until 2022. How do I avoid the double state tax liability?

By reading the forms instructions for each state, determining what the options are (some states allow MFS in this scenario even when they otherwise require MFJ, some states allow elective MFS, some states give a credit to the other state, some states have a reverse credit scenario), and picking the one that seems most appropriate for your client.
