Question

How to fill in form 3800? Does form 3800 can be found in all the returns including 1040 ?

Form 3800 is about general business credit. The form itself includes multiple forms within it such as form 3468, 7207, 6765, 8881, and ect.  It is mentioned that the form is on the return of  1040, 1041, 1120, and 1065.

I am curious about this form with the below questions:

1. How to fill in this form?

2. Where this form can be found on 1040?

3. Why this form is not included on 1120S return?

    1. I think the credits from the other forms will flow to Form 3800.

    3. Because credits pass through to shareholders on their K-1s.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Think of the 3800 as the end of a funnel. The specific types of credits are under their own regulations, and funnel to the 3800 as required for reporting.

For instance, there is an older Employee Retention Tax Credit for disasters, but there was a recent Employee Retention Credit from covid-19. The ERTC is reported on 3800. The ERC is not reported on 3800. ERTC is applied against tax. ERC is applied as part of Payroll (to simplify it).

If my memory serves me correctly, if the credit is the result of a carry forward on the form 1040, then I did have to go to a worksheet/form to enter the specific type of credit and/or information in order to get it to properly flow through,  I.E. compute, on the individual income tax return (Form 1040) for prior tax years, I.E. Form 1040 returns prior to 2023.
