Question

How do I allocate dual 1095-As, with one ineligible for PTC?

Background:

  • MFJ in California
  • Taxpayer receives full Veterans Administration (VA) individual medical care but also has private individual insurance through the marketplace. Because of VA care, taxpayer is not eligible to receive any Premium Tax Credit and must have a separate policy. Taxpayer receives an individual 1095-A showing zero APTC.
  • Spouse is not eligible for VA care and has own policy through the marketplace. Spouse received a separate 1095-A for her policy that shows an APTC.

Question:

What are the proper allocations to enter to prevent the taxpayer's 1095-A amounts from being  included in the calculations of the Premium Tax Credit on Form 8962?

Make sure (or look up) that the total SLCSP that shows up on the 8962 reflects the amount for the ONE qualifying person.

Should the SLCSP total for the taxpayer (who is not eligible for and has not received any APTC) be entered as zero? And don't do anything regarding Part IV allocations since they've been married the full year and it's a MFJ return, correct?

Yes, but in your case it seems like one of the taxpayers qualifies.  Look up the correct SLCSP (with only the one qualifying person) to see if it matches what is on the 1095-A and 8962.

Correct, no allocations unless the 1095-A covers someone that is NOT on the tax return.
