I have an organization that changed their year end from 6/30/XX to 9/30XX. I filed a stub period (3 month period) return for the period 7/1/24 to 9/30/24 in the ProConnect 2024 software. This year I am filing the current year return for the period 10/1/24 to 9/30/25 and the 2025 software tells me I can not file a return with a start date prior to 1/1/2025. Does this mean that I file 2 returns in the 2024 software or is there a place where I can indicate the correct 12 month period ended 9/30/25 in the 2025 software? I guess I just assumed it was to be filed using the 2025 software. Help please as it does not make sense to me filing 2 returns in 2024 for this organization. Thanks!

You always need to use the tax year software for the year your fiscal year begins. In this case use 2024 forms.

Logic? Taxes? Seriously?

In this case, think about it - this fiscal year started in 2024 under tax law in effect when it started. You may be able to get ProConnect to give you the extra credit it will need to redo the return with the proper year software. Give them a call.

And I believe you are going to have to paper file the second return filed using the same 2024 software.

I hope not as e-filing is what the IRS prefers so the software should comply but we know how that goes.

Thanks for the heads up!
