Question

Form 2555 and Sch SE for a foreign missionary

I'm trying to prepare a return for a foreign missionary who has minister wages and housing allowance reported on a W-2. The return should be generating 2555 FEIE and Sch SE. I've tried entering this info two ways:

(1) I entered the W-2 under income and checked the box for minister's wages, then filled out the 2555 general info. This generated Sch SE but not 2555. I then entered the wages in the Foreign Wages tab, and this doubled the income reported on 1040 line 1, and flowed the FEIE into Sch1 part I instead of Sch1 Part II.

(2) I deleted the W-2 from income and entered all of the W-2 info into the Foreign Wages tab with the minister box checked. This generated both Sch SE and 2555 and the 1040 looks correct. The problem is that it still flowed the FEIE into Sch1 part I instead of Sch1 Part II. And then it generated a NOL for the current year, which it shouldn't do.

I've been very careful to make the employer names match exactly, enter country codes and FEIE requirements correctly, tried changing / toggling everything that might possibly be related, all to no avail. I even put the info into Turbotax, and it came up with a correct return the first time, but I can't use that to file as a paid preparer.

Please help?

I went to Taxes > Other Taxes > Self-Employment Tax (Schedule SE) > Deductible part of self-employment tax [Override] > Enter a -1. It ignores the override if you input zero. That eliminated the NOL 172 form, but the NOL worksheet is still showing up. I think I'll just live with that.
