Entering a taxpayer that lives in one state but does work in multiple states

I have a taxpayer who lives in Maryland but works in several states during the year as an electrical line worker. I know how to allocate the income on the W2's to multiple states but the MD return should be a resident and if I check full time resident it won't allocate the income to the state he worked in.  If I don't check Full time resident and jult nulti state return Proconnect produces a non-resident Maryland return which is incorrect.  Not sure how to make this work.

You should select full time resident. Enter each w-2 for the state issued and it will be applied to that state return. If a multi state w-2 maybe this will help https://accountants.intuit.com/support/en-us/help-article/form-w-2/entering-w-2-wages-withholdings-multi-state-tax/L4nmxeYxo_US_en_US?uid=mld27ujc

When I do that then the program stops allocating the income to each state it was earned in.  Only when I uncheck full time resident does it put the income in the state it was earned.

Not sure if ProConnect works the same as ProSeries -- but there, you open nonresident returns for each state, and it shows the income from the W-2 associated with that state.  He pays tax to both states, but one gives a credit (sometimes only partial) for the tax paid to the other.  Do you have the other state returns?  Have you subscribed to them?

He pays MD tax on all his income. He may get a credit for tax paid to the nonresident states.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

I know that the taxpayer pays tax in MD on all the income but if you select Full time resident then the program doesn't tax the income in the state it was earned in the program even though you put the amount of income earned in each state correctly.

Are you coding the income ONLY to the state it was earned in? That should create a tax in that state, while also showing it as income in the state of residency.

Hi Kurt, ProConnect works slightly different then our other programs for mulit-state allocation.  To get it to do it correctly, you will do the following:

   1) Check the full-year resident box for MD on the client information screen.

   2) Check the multi-state return box on the client information screen (right under the full-year resident).

   3) On the W-2 screen, all allocations are completed inside the Box 1 box.  Do not use box 16.

So, for example, if the person worked a total of $100,000 wages, $50,000 MD, $20,000 VA,       $20,000 NY, and $10,000 PA.  You would enter it in box 1 as follows: $100,000 coded "US", $50,000 coded "MD" and sourced to "S", $20,000 coded "VA" sourced to "S", $20,000 coded "NY" sourced to "S", and $10,000 coded to "PA" sourced to "S".  When you do this looking at box 1 on the W2 screen it will show double the amount of the wages, however, don't be alarmed as reviewing the forms you will see that is just totaling the inputs and not actually doubling the wages on the return.  The state taxes paid will be entered in box 17 and set to the respective state they were paid in.  Also, depending on the states complete any state specific sections that are on the W2 main tab or State & Local tab, if applicable.

Any reciprocal states that are double-taxed ProConnect will automatically create credit for taxes paid.  Any others that you need to give credit for you can do so under Other --> State & Local --> Other State Tax Credit.

If you need further assistance, please give us a call and we can walk you through allocating everything correctly via screenshare: How to Contact ProConnect Support .

@Intuit_Kallana "Any reciprocal states that are double-taxed ProConnect will automatically create credit for taxes paid"

You don't get a credit for reciprocal states. For those you file a nonresident return and request a refund.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

True that was a typo.  What I meant to say is that ProConnect automatically handles reciprocal states as it needs to.
