Question

Can I write to IRS request waive penalty for late payment for client?

Hi,

I have a client we filed extension 4/15/2026 and set balance due with extension, unfortunately we accidently set mail payment instead of automatically withdraws so IRS never withdrew and the client did not sent payment.

The tax return filed in June 2026 and included the payment with extension due (which was never paid), now we received the IRS notice for the balance owed plus penalty and interest.

Is it possible IRS will waive the penalty (reduce interest charge) if we write a request.

Thanks!

You can always ask, but with the information you provided it would be very unlikely they would waive the penalties.

Asking is easy, getting results, not so easy.  The IRS has some hard nosed people working for them but I think they still might have a couple working for them that will bite on a good sob story.  But the interest is going to keep running until they respond to the letter weeks from now so keep that in mind.  A phone call (if you can get through) will shorten that window.  As Dirty Harry famously said - are you feeling lucky?
