I know I can deduct "partial disposition" for work done after putting the house into rental service.  But what if I do the work to the house just before I put it for rental while I live in it and then rented a few months afterwards?   I can't put the house for rental and then do the roof :  )

Really? "I know I can deduct "partial disposition" " I think you need to do a great deal more research before setting up your new rental.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p946.pdf and https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p527.pdf for starters.
