Question

Can a legal guardian claim a dependent and receive the full $3.6k of CTC if someone else filed for them in 2020 and received the first half of the credit in 2021?

Since the legal guardianship was not effective until 2021 the parent received the $1.8k CTC in 2021 (because they filed for the dependent in 2020). Should I show my client receiving the $1.8k even though they did not? Or should I have them claim the full CTC?

"Should I show my client receiving the $1.8k even though they did not?"     No

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Claim the credit if they meet the requirements and income limits. Show -0- as advance received.

The more I know the more I don’t know.
