Question

Can a couple file a joint federal return, but file separate a New Jersey tax return (One spouse lives in New Jersey, but the other lives in a state with no income tax)?

How do I enter the data? I have entered the data and I have not learned how to separate the income by each state.

Technically you can so long as one spouse was a FY-resident and the other a FY-NR.

From a process standpoint, however, you'll need to create a new return from that MFJ return and manipulate the existing entries in the new copy to make that kind of a proforma MFS for NJ filing purposes.
