Amending 2023 Tax Return for Dependent Care Credits - 1040X

I am amending a 2023 tax return for dependent care credits, originally filed in ProConnect. I've followed the instructions to select amendment and am about to file, however there are a few issues:

1. An error is popping "Form 1040: Form 1040-X is included in this return. This return must be e-filed as an amended return. Please use E-file Amendment options in the File Return. US - Ref #55205"

2. How should I be doing this if a superseded return? What is the difference?

3. The amended forms when I view "Check Return" do not include any income items - just tax items, since the tax was the only item that changed. Will this be a problem/

4. I want to roll the $1,200 refund (dependent care credit) to 2025, however the return appears to only allow 2024. Can this be changed?

5. There are multiple suggestions that are confusing:

"E-file of Form 1040-X for tax year 2023 is only allowed when 1) the original return for tax year 2023 was e-filed and 2) no more than 3 Form 1040-X Amended Returns or Superseded Returns have been e-filed for tax year 2023. US - Ref #55285"

"Form 8948: The IRS mandates individual electronic filing for anyone preparing more than 10 returns. This return is not marked for e-file, and Form 8948 is not present on the return. A reason for not filing the Federal return electronically can be entered on Form 8948, Preparer Explanation for Not Filing Electronically . US - Ref #15297"

Are these going to cause issues?

1) is informational, explaining the process for e-filing an amended
2) if it's after the original due date, including extensions, it's not a superseding return
3) if taxes are the only thing that changed, then taxes are the only thing that changed
4) best you can hope for is to have the refund sent as a check, then mail the check back with a letter requesting it be applied to 2025. Last time I had to send back a refund check (where the refund had originally been requested to be applied forward, and the IRS refunded anyhow), it took 4 years of returns before we got to stop sending checks back with letters. Just get your refund and pay your penalty and suck it up.
5) Those are not suggestions. They're explanation of the rules. Follow the rules relevant to your situation.

Regarding the roll forward / penalty, there is no penalty. I was figuring for simplicity it would be easiest to roll forward.

The "rules" don't seem to be correct - the return was filed electronically through ProConnect, so it seems to be more precautionary than anything else.

Hi @tccpg289 ,

1. An error is popping "Form 1040: Form 1040-X is included in this return. This return must be e-filed as an amended return. Please use E-file Amendment options in the File Return. US - Ref #55205"  This is indicating to you that you must use the E-file Amendment wizard.

2. How should I be doing this if a superseded return? What is the difference?  You can't supersede a 2023 return as we are past the due date of April 15, 2023.

3. The amended forms when I view "Check Return" do not include any income items - just tax items, since the tax was the only item that changed. Will this be a problem/  Amended returns only show what changed from the original return.

4. I want to roll the $1,200 refund (dependent care credit) to 2025, however the return appears to only allow 2024. Can this be changed?  No, the dependent care credit can't skip a year.  It has to follow the normal progression as if the return was being filed in its original year.

US - Ref #55285"  This is reminding you that if you did not efile the 2023 return originally you can't efile the amendment, you would have to paperfile it.

US - Ref #15297"   You don't have the return marked for efile on the Profile Screen.  Go to the profile screen and check the Federal box for efile to satisfy this diagnostic.

Regarding the 8948

It is odd as I do have the Federal Amended checked on the eFile

Hi @tccpg289 , is the amended return marked on the profile screen?  That what tells ProConnect you are efiling the return.
