How to deal with form W-2s from different states?

Hello,

In 2024, I received two W-2 forms:

  • W-2 #1 from a Virginia employer (Box 15 shows VA as the state).
  • W-2 #2 from a Washington state employer (Box 15 is empty). I worked as a summer intern in Washington for 2 months, which is why I received this W-2.

For the remaining 10 months of the year (January-April and July-December), I lived and worked in Virginia. I plan to file my state taxes as a Virginia resident and as a non-resident in Washington (since Washington doesn't have an income tax).

My question is: Do I need to include the income from W-2 #2 (Washington employer) on my Virginia tax return and pay Virginia state taxes on it?

Thank you!

Were you a resident of Washington?

Answers are easy. Questions are hard!

I lived in Washington State for 2 months temporarily. I think I am still counted as a Virginia resident for tax purposes. Thanks!

As a VA resident you have to pay VA tax on all of your income.

The more I know the more I don’t know.
