When e-filing an amended  2018 ca return for ca form 3840,  how do you check the "initial" box as 2018 is year of exchange?

That box is determined by the date of sale entered for the exchange. If 2018 it should show "initial"
You might need to contact support if it is not doing that. What screen did you do the input in?
