requirements to file form 2553

My wife, son and daughter-in-law started a candle making business this year.  We formed an LLC in Washington State and for the time being, we'll stay as an LLC.  Does the IRS still require filing form 2553 to declare what our filing type will be, or is that only if we want to become an S corp?
