As we started to review a return we noticed that the return did not include all the information from the federal form.  Only 5b and 6b were included and 4b was not included.  Called Lacerte and they (Brittany) said that they were aware of it and they would try and fix it in a few days.  This is basically adding three numbers and the program is failing to do that.  I would have liked to know how long this has been a problem.  I assumed basic additions was correct, now I feel we need to recalculate everything manually just to check basic math.  What else is wrong and they are not telling us.

The programming to make software work is layered and complicated, especially when the whole structure of the tax code can change at the whim of Congress and state legislatures. So this is far from basic math. Yes, there will be bugs in it. You did exactly the right thing, you called Support and reported it so that it could be investigated and fixed.

I agree that we should be able to rely on the software. But at the end of the day, the software developers are just as human as we preparers are. It becomes incumbent on us to have reviews and double-checks for our work.

And then if something still gets missed, well, then we hope it's eligible for penalty abatement and we notify our insurance carriers in advance. 🙂
