How do I handle a new client already on extension in Lacerte?

Hi everyone,

I have a new client who has e-filed an extension Form 4868 with FreeTax USA.

How do I handle the existing extension when preparing his 2025 tax return? Do I attach a .pdf?

Thank you!!

Just mark, in Screen 9, the box “1” for automatic extension.  Don’t mark the box for ‘efile’ extension as it’s past the due date.  That will trigger the October 15 filing date.

Attaching a pdf is pointless;  the IRS already knows plus no one at the IRS reads the attachments anyway.

    Hi  abctax55,

Thank you for your reply. So when I check the box  “1”  it generates Form  4868 which means that it will be e-filed with the return I prepare. But  the amounts  will be different than those the client e-filed on extension. Does that matter? Can I ignore the data the client provided and just prepare the 1040 as it should?

I always wonder about  why they ask to attach any .pdf forms. For example, they want us to attach Form 172 for NOLs. How do you handle F172?

    Thank you!

If it bothers you, you can fill in the Lacerte extension with the numbers the client used. But it really doesn’t matter.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Correct… those extension numbers are irrelevant.

I believe the NOL diagnotic in informational only ?  And says IF more than one year?  I haven’t had to deal with it recently.

Yes it’s for more than one year and the balance is being carried forward.

    Thank you!
